Kendo 'Rx Neo-Psytrance, Hardtrance and a lil' spice of Gabber Bloomington, Indiana USA
|
|
|
Born and raised in a town which forces those with the love of EDM to their basements, Kendo 'Rx held regular raves in a small dimly lit basement for those who wanted the big sound of real EDM with a small show of lights. Making music for over 6 years on keyboards he turned his attention to EDM three years ago. The sound he came up with got louder and harder as time progressed and word of his Djing spread.
...
Quotes after hearing songs:"It made my knees weak...", "Too hot for TV", "You're a f*cking god of music!!", "This is quality Sh*t!!"
A blend of many types of EDM he tends to stay close to the category given to him. Neo-Gabber-Psytrance. A wonderful blend of each genre where he makes good use of each of their specific characteristics.
"It's like a f*cking chisel in my ear!!!!!!"
Also a digital artist, his artwork has been displayed on the campus of Indiana University where he studied for a year's time. During that period of time he took up offers as character designer for video games being made by the Telecommunication Department of the university. No plans to stop anytime soon music wise. Kendo'Rx makes good effort to know his fans and would love to hear from all of them. Contact information is available and if you would like to download some tunage just hit him up. He won't bite.<3 EDM
"Play it loud because I'll have it no other way."

This interview was conducted by EDM Spectrum Team Member, Ashley, and was conducted via Instant Messaging.
KENDO 'RX: shall we do this?
EDM SPECTRUM: absolutely!! just one sec... i was making a bagel
...
KENDO 'RX: i want potatoes
mm bagels
EDM SPECTRUM: Ok I'm ready... are you?
KENDO 'RX: LETS DO THIS!!!!
EDM SPECTRUM: cool
right this second... tell me exactly whats on your mind
KENDO 'RX: ummm
how when making hardstyle music
you have to get as close to the point where something might get too hard to listen to
and how i utterly love that
EDM SPECTRUM: you just woke up and thats what you were thinking?
KENDO 'RX: yeah
EDM SPECTRUM: so you think about music 24/7?
KENDO 'RX: when i say Hardbeats sooth my Heart beat
i mean it
i've been sitting there in a group of people
talking
and i just stop listening and talking
and all i hear
and think about
is a fat kick just blaring through the speakers
and a really
REALLY
hard bass line just pulsating
EDM SPECTRUM: when you walk around outside... do you turn all of the noises you hear into a song?
KENDO 'RX: yeah
I do.
Sometimes I'll hear like someone dropping something, or a car trying to start or some other random thing happening
and my mind just kicks into gear and I have like a mental picture of what they would look like on the EQ
and i'll pick little things out of all teh noise
and see if i can use it
in alot of my earlier stuff
i would record really random sounds of people screaming or saying random phrases
and things of the sort
EDM SPECTRUM: so aside from your environment... what or who are your other musical inspirations?
KENDO 'RX: that is a list that goes on for a while... but the main players for the music i make now would have to be
Blutonium Boy, Dj N3ck, Yoji Biomehanika, Ferry Corsten and...
breaks and other sorts of the Harder genres of electronic dance music
Enduser, Hellfish and Producer, Hecate and Venetian Snares
there are more just those are what come to mind
EDM SPECTRUM: What kind of tools do you use to write your music?
KENDO 'RX: my mouse
EDM SPECTRUM: lol... ok... using your mouse... what programs do you use?
KENDO 'RX: ohhh
okay
I use GarageBand
the program can be very limited but when you mess with it enough you can find ways around all the things they don't really want you to do with it
and plus
i have the oldest version of GarageBand
so
if i were to update ... i bet i wouldn't have alot of the problems i have now with the program
EDM SPECTRUM: Take me through the steps you use to make a song (technically, emotionally, or whatever the case may be).
KENDO 'RX: * inhales *
the inspiration for a song could hit at anytime... so whenever a beat or melody, usually a beat, pops into my head i'll do my best to remember the key parts of it. This usually doesn't help because something very sparkly could catch my eye or somethign could be on fire and... i lose... everything. So I'll take my cell phone run away to some corner or park the car at the far end of a parking lot and have the phone record what i'm saying and singing to it.
this usually helps
but i do forget at times that i have recorded anything because it's very likely that the sparkly object is still around.
Anywho
as soon as I get home
I get to work
i load up the computer get all of it's armor ready for the musicing and get to it
the real emotional part of production usually happens when i have the beginning, middle and the end all planned out and ready to be placed together
I'll have them all ready to go
and I start piecing the song together
you really have to feel the music and understand what you are trying to say through it
then
you clean it all up
and add in the little things that help push the song further along
it's all about expressing emotions from an organic creature through inorganic sounds
to me that is
So...
I've pieced everything together and now it's time to for the countless hours of listening to the song AND watching the EQ to make sure all the sounds that I've made throughout the night aren't overpowering anything else and are coming in loud and clear
this takes some time
hours
days
i'm still doing this for a few songs i've made a while ago
EDM SPECTRUM: is it worth it? In the end, are you happy with the outcome?
KENDO 'RX: Very
It's very rewarding to have the thing you've worked so hard on come out perfectly
EDM SPECTRUM: I bet... speaking of perfection ... name one of your tracks
KENDO 'RX: sheesh
okay
i could pick any song i've made to pieces and tell you what I could of done better and what I'd rather like it to sound like
but i'm going to go with
...
EDM SPECTRUM: now why would you think that I want you to pick apart one of your already perfected songs? Just pick a name... any of your tracks...
you will see...
maybe your favorite?
KENDO 'RX: I'm very proud of _Fi.r.e.S.tor.m_
EDM SPECTRUM: now... tell me how you came up with that name
KENDO 'RX: well i usually change the name of a song around while i'm making it
this song went through about three different name changes if i remember correctly
but in the end the song had this feel of a uncontrollable fire just raging through a city burning all in it's path
if not burning then... something else making them very uncomfortable
plus i wasn't the happiest camper when making this song for certain reasons
So at the end the song had this feel to it that made me want to stomp around and make everyone else listen to it whether they wanted to or not
you know play it so loud it starts to hurt
or cause bowel movements
either or
EDM SPECTRUM: LOL
ok... so... how did you come up with your artist name?
KENDO 'RX: Would you be satisfied if i just told you it came to me?
EDM SPECTRUM: sure
if thats really how it happened
KENDO 'RX: well there is a story behind it
EDM SPECTRUM: oh do tell
KENDO 'RX: when i was making more lighter sounding songs, more melodic and just easier to listen to for the masses, i would be pestered by people for more music
and they would act like they needed it
like an addiction
EDM SPECTRUM: hence the 'rx .... very nice
KENDO 'RX: Yup
and I decided
okay
You want it
You get it
then the beats got louder the lines got harder
EDM SPECTRUM: and where does Kendo come from... is that part of your real name?
KENDO 'RX: Yes
EDM SPECTRUM: what is your opinion of the music industry today?
KENDO 'RX: you mean here in the US?
cause if you do
i think it's horrible for electronic musicians
we are usually pushed to the side and forced to live on the web and use that as our main way of getting our music out to people
but that can also be a good thing at the same time
so... i'd give it
a 4 out of 10
and a pat on the ass
EDM SPECTRUM: if you had the power... what changes would you make? How would you go about making the EDM Scene bigger and better?
KENDO 'RX: Well I'd make it easier for people to buy edm albums in stores
but i do think it's better just to let the masses come to this genre on their own
just let the sickness catch them
oh yeah
umm
bigger speakers, more lights and more lasers
with optional cowbell
EDM SPECTRUM: LOL... more cowbell is always good
what do you think your strengths and weaknesses are?
KENDO 'RX: strengths music wise would be ...
this is one of those question i'd like to have some one else answer
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
KENDO 'RX: But i think I make a really mean drum line
one of my weaknesses is making this question very hard to answer
i start to compare my music to the big boys up top getting paid the bucks to make the noise
and I start saying to myself "I can never get up there, my music is crap compared to theirs and f*ck they are good."
EDM SPECTRUM: thats a very negative attitude to have. We think your music is great!! You can mos def make it to any level you wish to be at... you just have to keep at it and get yourself out there
KENDO 'RX: true true
i do think i could give them a run for their money though
EDM SPECTRUM: I agree! where do you see yourself in five years?
KENDO 'RX: still at it... hopefully on tour
can you keep a secret?
my dream is to play at Sensation Black
EDM SPECTRUM: ummm you do realize this is an interview
that will be posted
KENDO 'RX: WOOOO!!!
EDM SPECTRUM: lol...
I'm not familiar with Sensation Black... care to tell me about it?
KENDO 'RX: well there is Sensation White
and Sensation black
EDM SPECTRUM: and these are clubs/events?
KENDO 'RX: they are very very very BIG well funded raves
EDM SPECTRUM: where do they take place?
KENDO 'RX: the most recent one was in amsterdam if i remember correctly
and they switch places every year as far as i can tell
Sensation White is for the the really trancey music
and the audience dresses in white
Black is when the hardstyle comes out
and they all dress in black
it's really impressive to watch
EDM SPECTRUM: ah yes... i just did a search for it... seems exciting
if you go... i want to go too
lol
KENDO 'RX: yeah
i would totally go all out
and bring my own pyrotechnics
EDM SPECTRUM: oooh
Wikepedia says Sensation Black is always in Amsterdam
FROM WIKEPEDIA: "Sensation Black is an annual dancing event, held in the Amsterdam Arena every second Saturday of July since 2002. ID&T, the company that organises the event, claim it is the "World's leading dance event" with 40,000 people attending a single show. During the event, DJs produce music, and attendees (typically dressed in black clothing) dance to the music. The venue has elaborate lighting, fireworks and other visual effects. Sensation Black was created in 2002 in order to give room to genres like hardcore and hardstyle, while Sensation White features trance music (often viewed as 'soft' by hardcore music listeners) like the original Sensation event did in the previous two years. Each year, ID&T sells an album and a single containing that year's anthem for each edition."
KENDO 'RX: then it's always in Amsterdam then
EDM SPECTRUM: ok lets go
hehehe
if you had the opportunity to collaborate with one other artist, who would it be and why?
KENDO 'RX: well i have two answers to that
staying close to the style of music i do now it'd be a dream come true to do something with Aphex Twin
but as a challenge
i would Love to do something Xtronika
someone with alot of talent
and different style then mine
I'd love to hear the styles clash
and come together some how
EDM SPECTRUM: that is interesting because your music is really on a different end of the spectrum... but it would be exciting to hear what you could produce using two totally different styles such as yours and his
haha... yes
KENDO 'RX: yeah exactly
me and my synths screaming
and him doing his thing
EDM SPECTRUM: yes... it would be very interesting... who knows... maybe someday...
ok... so lets have some more fun now... we'll take a step away from the serious questions for a little while
KENDO 'RX: BRING IT!!!!!!
EDM SPECTRUM: ok...
this or that?
KENDO 'RX: grr
EDM SPECTRUM: ??
KENDO 'RX: too much or too sexy?
*drum roll*
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
r u going to answer? or are you going to answer all of my questions with questions?
KENDO 'RX: Well it depends
you feelin' lucky?
EDM SPECTRUM: yep
KENDO 'RX: okay
So I'll have to chose this. I'd rather stay closer to what i know and what i can handle but I do have to admit that a little bit of that wouldn't be that bad. You know just hold my nose and cannon ball straight into the unknown.
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
coke or pepsi?
KENDO 'RX: water please
here's a little fact that I learned in college
coke/cock
pepsi/penis
too close for comfort
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
ok
sunset or sunrise
KENDO 'RX: Sunset. The cover of darkness is home to me.
EDM SPECTRUM: indoors or outdoors?
KENDO 'RX: HISSSS sunlight HISSS
but during the winter outdoors
summer indoors
or in the mud
EDM SPECTRUM: haha
star wars or star trek?
KENDO 'RX: Battlestar Galactica
NO
FARSCAPE
EDM SPECTRUM: LOL... fair enough
KENDO 'RX: yeah 100% Farscape
EDM SPECTRUM: haha ok
hamburgers or hot dogs?
KENDO 'RX: hamburgers please
i've eaten ones the size of my head
and word of my eating skills are well known
EDM SPECTRUM: lol... have you ever entered an eating contest?
KENDO 'RX: not any ones for real
but we held nugget party 2K5
and i came out on top
300 chick nuggets
and 70 were taken care of by me
EDM SPECTRUM: LOL
KENDO 'RX: i'm very proud of it
i've never hallucinated from eating like that before
i dragged tree limbs all the way home cackling at random things
EDM SPECTRUM: LOL
dog or cat?
KENDO 'RX: cat
but one day I will own a sugar glider
and i will name her Noodles
EDM SPECTRUM: sugar glider?
KENDO 'RX: Cute
fuzzy
think squirrel
the cutest... grey black
and glides
EDM SPECTRUM: LOL
ok
KENDO 'RX: Noodles is gonna rock
EDM SPECTRUM: ok now i'm going to say a word... and you say the first thing that comes to mind
money
KENDO 'RX: potatoes
EDM SPECTRUM: fun
KENDO 'RX: carpet games
EDM SPECTRUM: watch
KENDO 'RX: fruntrexision et farvil
EDM SPECTRUM: electric
KENDO 'RX: POWERED DEATH WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU ALL!!!!!!
EDM SPECTRUM: found
KENDO 'RX: what?
EDM SPECTRUM: is that your answer?
KENDO 'RX: yes
EDM SPECTRUM: lol ok
beat
KENDO 'RX: bpm
EDM SPECTRUM: long
KENDO 'RX: fire like heart burn
EDM SPECTRUM: soul
KENDO 'RX: virginity
EDM SPECTRUM: change
KENDO 'RX: meat
EDM SPECTRUM: first
KENDO 'RX: gears
EDM SPECTRUM: if you could be something or someone for one day, who or what would you be?
KENDO 'RX: i like being me and all but i'm gonna go with
...
yeah...
being me is good enough
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
u sure?
final answer?
its just for one day?
KENDO 'RX: yeah I'm going to have to go with me ... but I'd love to look through the eye's of a dj controlling a crowd of a few thousand
give em a beat to move to
a beat that moved you
that you put your all into
EDM SPECTRUM: nice answer
what is your favorite food?
KENDO 'RX: my moms lasagna
each piece is like 2 pounds
anything but tofu
my stomach needs real food
meat
cheese
more meat
cheese on top of that
EDM SPECTRUM: what kind of cheese is your favorite?
KENDO 'RX: for eating mass quantities of cheese I have to have my cheese stringed
but i do love a fine stinky french cheese
and like when i want greens i'll eat half a tree
EDM SPECTRUM: what kind of tree?
KENDO 'RX: if i could really eat a tree
i want it filled with creatures of all kind... something endangered. So i can be known as the guy who ate a whole tree with the last remaining Coo Coo bird in it
EDM SPECTRUM: lmao
KENDO 'RX: yeah something along those lines
EDM SPECTRUM: who is your favorite cartoon character?
KENDO 'RX: OH MAN
im a cartoon buff
if i had to chose to be one... i'd be Sonic the hedgehog
EDM SPECTRUM: is he your favorite or do you just want to be him?
KENDO 'RX: i just want to be him
my favorite charatoon character as a whole would have to be Spawn though
EDM SPECTRUM: what was the first job you ever had?
KENDO 'RX: working the sound and lights for a puppet show
i've been around circuits, buttons and levers for a long time
there is nothing more soothing at times then the hummmm and nuke warm feel of some machine to me
EDM SPECTRUM: do you have any tattoos?
KENDO 'RX: the human body is a piece of art as is
EDM SPECTRUM: fair enough
what is your biggest pet peeve?
KENDO 'RX: I'm pretty easy going in-general
but
the only thing that rubs me the wrong way
would be
males mistreating females
EDM SPECTRUM: its nice to hear that...
KENDO 'RX: yeah
i've gotten into a few scuffles in my life over this
but something more along pet peeve world would be
if one speaker is messed up
and the other is fine
like there is a difference in the speakers
even though they should be playing just fine
OH
and when some one plays too much bass in a song and it drowns out everything else
usually in the car this happens
yeah so
music
and women
if the music aint perfect
or if the women is being abused even a little
EDM SPECTRUM: very good answers
what else should i ask you?
KENDO 'RX: not what i'm wearing
or anything about my nipples
EDM SPECTRUM: well i already know you like to rub your nipples when you talk to certain ppl online...
you said so yourself in our shoutbox
but, now i'm curious... what are you wearing?
KENDO 'RX: covers
i told you i just woke up and turned on the computer
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
nice
i'm talking to naked Kendo!
KENDO 'RX: yup
only on edm spectrum
EDM SPECTRUM: yes... its seems as though our little tight knit family may be a little too close for our own good sometimes... but its still fun
KENDO 'RX: oh yeah
i'd have it no other way
you don't know the limits until you plow through them in car with turrets and flame throwers
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
KENDO 'RX: something like that
EDM SPECTRUM: right
so what advice to you have for other DJs and musicians?
KENDO 'RX: remember the past, but let it die
there is no more need for f*cking sandstorm remixes
in other words
don't squeeze into mold if it doesn't fit
and finally
fool me once shame on you. fool me twice shame on me. fool me a third time then blame the horse you road in on... or your butcher or... how ever it goes
EDM SPECTRUM: lol... nice.... and my final questions.... What do you think of the EDM Spectrum? What would you change anything about it?
KENDO 'RX: i think it's great. it has got to be the best place i've ever found on the web. great talents of all kinds
i'd change the design a bit
but i'm working on some stuff for Joel at the moment
EDM SPECTRUM: very cool
KENDO 'RX: which could help with that
EDM SPECTRUM: well thank you for your kind words, your suggestions, and taking the time to let me interview you! its been fun!
KENDO 'RX: i agree
and now
i'm gonna go get dressed
EDM SPECTRUM: lol
ok
thanks again sweetie
KENDO 'RX: YAAAAAAAAAY
*RUNS naked down the hall way*
