DJ David Call (fka Vanish) Trance, Electro, Club
|
|
|
DJ David Call played with his first set of turntables in 2003 after a roommate brought them home. The two literally started from scratch and have worked their way into quite the formidable duo, getting booked by GSP Entertainment and DJ David Call himself forming an alliance with Ohio's well known DJ, Aus-10.
...
On the production side of things, DJ David Call began when a friend gave him some software to play with, and he immediately took off on an unending remix of Way Out West's track "Mindcircus" which is in it's final stages of production. He has since strayed from the world of trance and begun producing tracks fusing elements of techno, house, and electro. Look for future productions to include elements from both sides of the spectrum.

This interview was conducted by EDM Spectrum Team Member, Ashley, and was conducted via Instant Messaging.
EDM SPECTRUM:
ok lets get started
...
DJ DAVID CALL:
let's not
:oP
continue
EDM SPECTRUM:
hahaha... ok.... at this very moment... tell me exactly whats on your mind
DJ DAVID CALL:
Why the Stoneface & Terminal remix of Duende - Ilimitado isn't as good as the original. Very disappointing
EDM SPECTRUM:
awww.. i'm sorry to hear that... maybe you should make a better remix
DJ DAVID CALL:
If I could get my hands on a remix pack, I just might try
EDM SPECTRUM:
People can read in your bio that you first started from scratch on a set of tables that your roommate had brought home in '03... is there anything else you'd like to add about how you got started DJing and eventually producing? Maybe some of the influences you had at that time
DJ DAVID CALL:
I've never much liked listening to other DJs sets. I enjoy going to live shows, and at the time that included Armin, Ferry, Micro, Kimball Collins, and a few others, but I always wanted to play MY songs, because I always knew that there was better music out there that people weren't hearing. Honestly, I never wanted to be a DJ much, my heart lies in production, and always has. Being the man behind the music means the world to me, playing it for people just worked at the time, so I started that first.
EDM SPECTRUM:
What kind of tools do you use to produce your music?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I use FL Studio 5 Producer Edition, along with Albino II, Reaktor 4, Vanguard, V-Station, and Hypersonic for my synths. I've also got a giant library of percussion and effects samples that I've acquired through friends in the industry. I have zero hardware, and zero prior musical knowledge. It's been a steep learning curve, but I'm finally getting to where I want to be, knowing I can make almost any sound I want with what I'm given.
EDM SPECTRUM:
wow! thats a lot of programs! While prior music knowledge can have its benefits, I think its not only great, but amazing as well, that you can create this incedible music from your pure emotion, wants, and needs for particular sounds
Take me through the steps that you use to make a song
DJ DAVID CALL:
Rarely, very rarely, I'll just be doing something random, like my laundry, and I'll just get a few notes in my head, and then hum them while getting a whole "chorus" in my head, then I drop whatever I'm doing, run home, create the general melody with the default piano, which sounds awful, and then save it so I can work on it later. I've had to re-wash a lot of laundry for this reason. Most of the time I'll be working on my percussion mixing and leveling, and then throw some random sound in there, and the sound will inspire it's own melody. This is the exact case for my unfinished track Fleet, now underway.
EDM SPECTRUM:
great! I hope that you give all of us a chance to hear it when its finished
DJ DAVID CALL:
I'm stuck completely and entirely on the main hook, the old one didn't work with what the song progressed into. When I think of one, I'll send it on over
EDM SPECTRUM:
sounds good! ........ Name one of your current tracks
DJ DAVID CALL:
I just started seriously producing a track that will feature my sister's vocals and lyrics, called The Client, as the words portray a hooker trying to calm a man down since his wife's out of town and he's nervous. It's sung from the hooker's point of view, and with a topic like that, it's obviously not trance, but a hard, dirty, grungy electro-house track. It's already being looked at by Portamento Records, and I just started it 3 days ago!
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol... well my next question was going to be "how did you come up with that name?".... but looks like you already answered that! hahaha... but thats great!! I hope everything works out
so i know your love is producing, but you still DJ at clubs/events, correct?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I've got a Friday night residency at Club Seven here in town, where I'm spinning with Thomas Datt later this month, and a few shows with other local great DJs and friends of mine. I also have done some guest appearances at other clubs around town. Currently I'm working with a promoter in the Twin Cities area trying to get a gig there, and I'll also be sending press kits to local DJs and promoters in Miami to see if I can't get a slot somewhere at the WMC in 2007.
EDM SPECTRUM:
thats great news.... now looking more closely at individual shows... what goes through your mind right before you go on?
DJ DAVID CALL:
"I'm hungry, and I really should have eaten, but at least I'll require less alcohol. Oh wait, I drink for free, I'm the DJ. Splendid!"
EDM SPECTRUM:
hahaha nice!... so is there anything in specific that you do every time before a show to help you prepare or get hyped up? any superstitions?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I'd like to show up earlier, so that I have loads of time to just lounge around, talk with the bartenders and manager and owner a little bit more, get comfy in the club before I get things kick-started. Kick-started may or may not be hyphenated. Other than that, nope. I'm really not very nervous anymore, and I don't have the shakes. Gimme a screwdriver, let me play a bit mellow until people really crowd in, and then I'll be all smiles and dancing as long as they're having a good time, and happily, they always are.
EDM SPECTRUM:
if you had the opportunity to perform at one club anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I don't know names specifically, but the stadium in Amsterdam where most of the huge shows go on, I'd wanna play there. Ibiza would be fun and everything, but to look out over a packed stadium full of people smiling at me and spilling their emotions at me while I change their lives for an hour or two, I honestly cannot imagine a better example of heaven on earth.
EDM SPECTRUM:
thats such a great attitude to have, and from an EDM enthusiast's point of view, its refreshing to hear that thats what you are thinking up there on stage when we're looking up at you
now moving from DJing to Producing... if you had the opportunity to collaborate with one other artist, who would it be, and why?
DJ DAVID CALL:
That's probably the hardest question you'll ask. Initially I would say Darren Tate, as he's been my longest-running hero. I'm going to have to say Andreas Schmidt though. I've spoken to him twice now, and he's nice as can be. His melodies inspire so much emotion and passion in everyone that I've played them for, it's uncanny. The man knows the way to bring out all that we try and tuck away in today's calloused world. He's a true inspiration.
EDM SPECTRUM:
you speak a lot about emotion through music... what are your views on the current state of the music industry and the EDM scene today as opposed to a few years back?
DJ DAVID CALL:
It seems to be recessively growing. Is that possible? Dance music as a whole is spreading. I talk to kids everywhere, and most of them fall apart over Darude, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Oakenfold (which is sad because they always spell their names wrong), and while it's good to see they're moving away from whatever people listen to nowadays (I don't listen to the radio or watch MTV, so I have no idea what's mainstream currently), there's a whole new generation of kids that think raving is about drugs, and "techno" is about Tiesto. I'm sort of the in-between age (at 22), but I know that raving was supposed to be about community and music, and that Tiesto can't stand up to the producers popping up today, such as Thomas Datt, Joni Ljunqvist, James Wood, and Thomas Bronzwaer (among others). It would be nice if there were a quicker way to educate. I guess that's what the Internet's for.
EDM SPECTRUM:
yes... and that is also what our site is for... we do hope people come not just for the good music, but for the knowledge as well.... thanks to people like you and our other artists, we may be able to make a few people see the truth and join the culture in the correct fashion
where do you see yourself in five years?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I've pretty recently begun networking with some of my current heroes, such as Thomas Datt, Gareth Emery, Joni, Wood, and a few others (thanks to online communities) and I've been in touch with amateur producers for years now, so I think with the future of dance music on all of our shoulders, these connections will grow, I'll expand my networking, make an impact with forthcoming productions of mine, and spread the word by touring. I have zero doubts in my mind that I'll be signed to a label by a maximum of two years from now, as I think I'm almost ready, and my mixing career has really taken off since the beginning of 2006, so I hope to be about where Gaz (Emery) is now in about 5 years for me. I just want to share my love for this with as many people as possible, regardless of what that means.
EDM SPECTRUM:
you have such a postive attitude! We wish you the best of luck and will be here to support you along the way...
ok lets get into the crazier questions... the fun part
DJ DAVID CALL:
Mai f4v0r173 <----yes, I just said that.
EDM SPECTRUM:
hahaha! ah... the pleasure of internet language... so fun
DJ DAVID CALL:
It scares me, yet I embrace it. Such is youth
EDM SPECTRUM:
alright.... you're stranded on an island and can only have three things with you, which three things would you choose?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Solar powered ipod, goggles, and some flippers. I wanna see all the pretty stuff.
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol! awesome
and what would you name this island?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Vanish Island, after my first production/DJ alias, and what I'd obviously be doing there, as I'm sure nobody would come find me.
EDM SPECTRUM:
awwww... we'd do a search for you!!
if you could be someone or something for one day, who or what would you choose to be, and why?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I would be an air force fighter pilot, because originally, that's what I wanted to do with my life. Fighter planes amaze me.
EDM SPECTRUM:
oooh that sounds exciting
what is your favorite food?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Pizza, and I want some right now! Preferrably just cheese and pepperoni. I'm a picky eater to the Nth degree.
EDM SPECTRUM:
favorite quote?
DJ DAVID CALL:
It's from Lustral - Everytime: "When I'm lonely, your voice is in my head. And my memory feeds my soul with all the things you said." For the record, that's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.
EDM SPECTRUM:
very beautiful indeed
ok.... choose one or the other.....
this or that?
DJ DAVID CALL:
72, as previously stated.
EDM SPECTRUM:
hahaha ok... i'll let that slide
black and white or color?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Black and white, just like vinyl baby
EDM SPECTRUM:
music or money?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I don't always have a lot of money, but I always have the music to break my heart with me, so I'd say I choose music
EDM SPECTRUM:
walmart or target?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Target. Classier in my opinion.
EDM SPECTRUM:
star wars or star trek?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Star Wars!!!! Is that a real question? Trekkies = scary.
EDM SPECTRUM:
LOL... i agree
peas or carrots?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I like both. I'll go with carrots though.
EDM SPECTRUM:
ok... now i'm going to say a word and you say the first thing that comes to mind... no thinking... just the first thought that pops into your head
DJ DAVID CALL:
Sure thing

EDM SPECTRUM:
who is your favorite cartoon character, and why?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Captain Murphy on Sealab 2021. Voiced by the late Harry Gaz, who I'll miss forever
EDM SPECTRUM:
awww... i'm sorry
What is your biggest pet peeve?
DJ DAVID CALL:
People who've spoken and written English their whole lives, and get words wrong all the time. I just don't understand.
EDM SPECTRUM:
what is the answer to life?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Hahahaha, 42
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol you're only the second person that has gotten that question...
DJ DAVID CALL:
I read in some interview that scientists are finding that 42 really is a key number in quantum physics. I'm not kidding.
EDM SPECTRUM:
REALLY??? lol
DJ DAVID CALL:
Yeah
EDM SPECTRUM:
haha
what else should I ask you?
DJ DAVID CALL:
i'm not sure i REALLY liked all that, though
EDM SPECTRUM:
ok... well a few more questions of my own then and i'll set you free
DJ DAVID CALL:
bring it on doll
EDM SPECTRUM:
what advice do you have for aspiring DJs and Producers?
DJ DAVID CALL:
Most people that are just starting out think that I just woke up one day as a DJ. They freak out when I say that I practiced in my bedroom for 3 years before I landed my first gig playing out. It takes loads of dedication, lots of money, lots of patience, inner talent, and the passion to do it for the right reasons. If you have all those, by all means, I'd love to hear your work!
EDM SPECTRUM:
and finally... what do you think of the EDM Spectrum? and would you change anything about it?
DJ DAVID CALL:
I think it's a great place to meet people from literally all ends of the spectrum, as far as genre, experience, ability, and identity. It's a community based on acceptance, which is what dance music has generally been all about since the beginning. It's hard to ask for much more from a community. I thank you guys for featuring me as your first showcase artist. That sincerely meant the world to me.
EDM SPECTRUM:
you're very welcome!! Thank you for your kind words and sticking with us from the beginning. And a big thanks for taking the time to let me interview you
DJ DAVID CALL:
As always, it's been a pleasure. Thanks to all my fans who've gotten in touch with me via the site, and via myspace. Your support and kind words really are the driving force behind my perpetual forward motion in the scene. Thanks again.
