I've been listening to electronic music since '96 & gradually started collecting vinyl. Frustrated by the linear aspect of records, I started encoding music to my computer & using Windows Wav Editor to edit my tracks. With the conception of newer technology & software, I've eventually moved beyond standard Windows '98 technology to my all time favorite application, Abeton Live. This software has definitely fueled my dj/live
...
pa efforts to previous levels unsought of by amateur broke musicians. Having control over what I play has made me a lot happier with music. I'm able to take any track & make it suite my needs. Everything you hear me play has been edited & re-cut to match my tastes (which is very picky).
I weaned myself off Propellerhead's Reason when I bought my first hardware synth, an Access Virus KC. Since then I've steadily built up my studio to a comfortable level. I'm also taking piano lessons to ensure all the right keys are hit & chords are correct.
My recent four year stint in Virginia has been a fruitful one as I was able to play & get to know a few good people like the great East Coast promoter/dj Mooqfsh & world class local dj/producer Anthony Paul. Eventually, my travels led me to Birmingham, Alabama where I'm trying to insert myself into the populous & get back to the level where I was in Virginia.
The styles I enjoy playing/producing range from downtempo to hard techno with focus on the progressive side of things.

This interview was conducted by EDM Spectrum Team Member, Ashley, and was conducted via Instant Messaging.
EDM SPECTRUM:
so just to break the ice... do you know any good jokes?
JACKSIN:
oh jokes...
what do you call a 1 eyed dear?
...
EDM SPECTRUM:
what?
JACKSIN:
(Southern dialect) No idear
EDM SPECTRUM:
LMAO!!!
JACKSIN:
hard to get across chat but glad you got it
EDM SPECTRUM:
being a southern girl i find that quite funny... well... VA isn't so southern... but i'm close enough to understand it! LOL
hahaha yeah
JACKSIN:
*smiles*
EDM SPECTRUM:
ok... so i've read your bio... and i'm sure others have too, but is there anything else you'd like to add about how you got started producing electronic music? maybe some of your artist inspirations?
JACKSIN:
What influenced me the most when I first started listening/producing electronic music was Sasha's Global Underground cd...
I still think his first 4 tracks are the greatest buildup in edm history
how everything built up to a weird ass tight progression of sequenced patterns still gets me to this day
EDM SPECTRUM:
Is he your favorite artist?
JACKSIN:
Not at the moment. My tastes change like the seasons. But he expanded my view from a Chemical Brothers type leaning into a more progressive range of sounds, for that I'll give Sasha eternal credit, but by no means is he my favorite artist....
I'd say it all came together when I saw Max Graham at a hotel rented out for a "rave" in 2000 in Baton Rouge, LA
He was using 3 turntables & a cd player (unheard of at the time)
he'd play one record & 32 beats after the break mix in a record with another build up & when it broke it filled in every conceivable gap in the sound & the mix out with another record & repeat the process for 3 hours!
I literally swore to myself that I'd stop making/spinning music after that.. but after a few months, I came to realize that I'd never be as good as him at what he does, so I'd have to try something different & just deal with it
EDM SPECTRUM:
awww... thats no way to think.... you should always strive to be the best
i'm sure you could do it
how long ago was that?
JACKSIN:
But after that party, I literally looked into the face of God... that would put anyone in their place, glad I got over it b/c I love what I do haven't regretted going back to producing... that was 6 years ago
EDM SPECTRUM:
so in the six years that you have been continually at it, you don't think that you could perform as well as this guy?
because i find that hard to believe considering how talented you are
JACKSIN:
With his experience? No, but I feel that I can deliver my objectives just as well as him...
I mean, he gets tracks sent to him as I send my tracks to other people & strive to find the best music that fits my tastes
EDM SPECTRUM:
well we all think you're amazing... and I'm sure glad that you did decide to go back to producing
JACKSIN:
Thanks so much I'm glad I got back into producing too as it makes me just as happy as the joy he bestowed to me that night
EDM SPECTRUM:
to the untrained ear... how would you describe your music to a new listener?
JACKSIN:
To an untrained ear, I would thank you for listening to my un-mastered frequency mistakes
With every production, you learn more about the peticulars about frequency isolation & how to make things sound "good"
but if you're un-aware of all that, I would say my sound is one that is mature & unconventional with the regular pop/mainstream edm
I try to exude a certain quality of raw sample manipulation & try to have an edge with my music
EDM SPECTRUM:
so what does this type of music mean to you (emotionally, technically, or whatever the case may be)?
JACKSIN:
Technical aside, I always try to strike the emotional side of people....
I want them to hear my tracks & I really try to get across what I'm feeling at the moment...
when producing my tracks, I shut my eyes & try to envision a moment in time, whether it be laying back in the couch & chilling out or jumping like crazy in a club, my music always depicts a peticular mood that I'm in & I only hope you can jump on the train I'm conducting
EDM SPECTRUM:
name one of your tracks
JACKSIN:
sneeky peaks
EDM SPECTRUM:
how did you come up with that name?
JACKSIN:
because the first part of it doesn't fill up the frequency spectrum, it drums along just going its normal route, then after the breakdown, totally fills every aspect of highs/mids/&bass, peaking the djs mixer with the sudden influx of sound & hopefully the listeners ears
good question!
EDM SPECTRUM:
thanks!
you sound like you work really hard on all of your tracks and your dedication to EDM goes through the roof, but is there anything you wish were different?
More over....
Do you regret anything along the way from the time you started until now?
JACKSIN:
I'm sure every producer/dj wishes he could be at the point he is now 3 years earlier. The one thing I regret most of all is falling into the trap of sacrifice. By that I mean playing or producing tracks they really didn't "feel". Commercial is where the money is, but my soul is harder to corrupt. I wish I never played at "regular people" parties spinning hip-hop. I wish I knew more about producing when I started. Sure, I regret plenty of things but what I take from it is learning my strengths, personal goals, & my unwavering need to do what I want.
EDM SPECTRUM:
hip hop?
JACKSIN:
Yes, sadly hip-hop...
Some of my friends learned I could dj, which automatically put me in the "He could play at our party" category.
I really do hate hip-hop... I just can't feel the message that those tracks try to exude. I'm not a player, I'm not a hustler, & I don't treat women as objects... the allure of an easy to mix genre is easy to fall into. But I had to end it. If I don't agree or like the music, I refuse to spin it.
EDM SPECTRUM:
thats a good attitude to have...
What tools are you currently using to produce music?
JACKSIN:
On the hardware side, I extensively use my trusty Access Virus KC & an Alesis Andromeda. For arranging & tweaking music (as well as Live PA gigs) I use Ableton Live 5. Live is the program I wish I had from the get-go. So easy to write an entire song without hitting the stop button.
EDM SPECTRUM:
If you could recommend three songs to me (whether they be your own or someone elses), what would they be?
JACKSIN:
Daan Duurkoop - Aestas (Remy Remix). Younger Brother - Evil & Harm. Trafik - Your Light (Luke Chable Return of the 3AM drop)
All beautifl tracks that keep a jamming attitude, which is exactly what I go for when I spin
EDM SPECTRUM:
When you get a gig and you're just about to go on stage or out on the floor, what goes through your mind?
JACKSIN:
I try to get to the place a good 2 hours before my gig for 2 reasons. 1 is to get a feel for what the crowd digs. 2 is to get a few drinks to calm my rambunctious nerves. I get the "Oh crap Oh crap Oh crap" type feeling just until I play my first track. Then all the butterflies go away & I just have fun with it!
EDM SPECTRUM:
sounds like fun!! I guess thats just because i'm sort of an adrenaline junkie, but i hope to experience one of your shows someday... that way I can watch your "oh crap" fit
lol
JACKSIN:
*smiles*
EDM SPECTRUM:
and dance around like the insane EDM enthusiast that i am
JACKSIN:
I do like to kiyak, which is about as much adrenaline as I like to get, but the pre-show anxiety gets me good each time
and yes, I'd love to see you dancing around!
EDM SPECTRUM:
someday... *smiles*
what would you say your strengths and weaknesses are?
JACKSIN:
My strengths are my undying conviction in that the tracks I play are exactly what I'd like to hear...
Weaknesses are my lack of good looks.
EDM SPECTRUM:
oh stop it
i'm sure your girlfriend would highly disagree
JACKSIN:
yes she would.. let me try that again... thanks btw
Some of my weaknesses are my ability to convey exactly how much fun I'm having behind the decks/keyboards & sometimes I play tracks I just want to hear over a lound system over the exact needs of the moment, but I usually recover & play what fits with the crowd... IMO that gives them a few mins to get something to drink & chill out only to be slammed back into what they want. A weakness & strength at once I suppose.
just ask AP (*Anthony Paul*), he's a master of looking the part where as I just concentrate on near-perfect mixes, but he manages to do it all at once.... he owns me
EDM SPECTRUM:
nah... i can't speak from experience... but i have a feeling you do just fine
JACKSIN:
*smiles*
EDM SPECTRUM:
There has been a big uproar lately about how the EDM Scene is dying... what do you think of the current state of the music industry?
JACKSIN:
Folks that start out listening to epic bubble-trance get tired of it, kids that start out listening to funky breaks grow weary. It all coincides with the way the music changes. My tastes have evolved as well & so does the music, the sounds get more intricate, the patterns more diverse, the djs get better & assimilate new technology. The EDM scene isn't dead, it's just that the people want something more & unless the local djs in their area change too then that scene will die. Local djs have more impact on a regular basis than a big name coming to town every 4 months.
EDM SPECTRUM:
If you could collaborate with one other artist who would it be and why?
JACKSIN:
oh boy...
...thinking... hard....
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol don't hurt yourself
JACKSIN:
i might...
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol
JACKSIN:
I've collaborated with some really great talent & each adds something different from my outlook on production... I'd have to go with members of Rabbit in the Moon. Their ability to remix on the fly & create new sensations at a whim impresses me beyond belief... I can only image working in the studio with them.
EDM SPECTRUM:
Ok... i think we've gotten through most of the serious questions... wanna have some fun now?
*Jackson sends a Nudge!*
JACKSIN:
shake it up
EDM SPECTRUM:
haha
great!
this or that?
JACKSIN:
The grass is always greener with "that"
EDM SPECTRUM:
coke or pepsi?
JACKSIN:
Coke, it's the original & Pepsi is a lame remix
EDM SPECTRUM:
mustard or ketchup?
JACKSIN:
Mustard, it can be spicey or sweet, mmm... spicey or sweet.....
EDM SPECTRUM:
Star wars or Star Trek?
JACKSIN:
I'm going to have to go with Star Wars. I can get away with discussing Star Wars with almost anyone but there's only a few people I chat about warp drives & teleporters.... plus Return of the Jedi had Leia in a hot bikini... definitely my first boner.
EDM SPECTRUM:
LMAO
nice
although i never really got her hair! whats up with those bun things! LOL
JACKSIN:
More to grab Ashley, more to grab
EDM SPECTRUM:
ROFLMFAO
i see
JACKSIN:
Besides, if you were doing it to Diana Troy, she'd be reading your mind & know that you were thinking of someone else... nothing but drama there.
EDM SPECTRUM:
LOL
ok... moving on.... i'm going to say a word... and you say the first thing that comes to mind
JACKSIN:
okey
EDM SPECTRUM:
happy
JACKSIN:
My attitude
EDM SPECTRUM:
lost
JACKSIN:
Lack of inspiration
EDM SPECTRUM:
change
JACKSIN:
Keeps me up at night, but I adapt
EDM SPECTRUM:
red
JACKSIN:
blue pill
EDM SPECTRUM:
money
JACKSIN:
Gear
EDM SPECTRUM:
deprived
JACKSIN:
Lack of gear
EDM SPECTRUM:
coffee
JACKSIN:
Addicts
EDM SPECTRUM:
if you could be someone or something for one day, who or what would you be?
JACKSIN:
Other than my girl, I love doggies, almost any doggy more than anything & I'd give anything to experience what they do for a day.
EDM SPECTRUM:
hehe... yeah that would be pretty cool... although i think most are pretty lazy and sit around the house all day... so i think i might get bored
JACKSIN:
oh but the smells & sounds... not to mention humping anything
that would rock
EDM SPECTRUM:
haha
ok... so the doctor says you only have 24 hours left to live... what would you do during those 24 hours?
JACKSIN:
Write a long good bye letter to everyone I love, rent a sports car, smoke a bunch of crack, & ram it into the side of a wall
EDM SPECTRUM:
LOL... that sounds morbid.. you wouldn't want to live for the whole 24 hours?
JACKSIN:
I didn't tell you how long I'd be smoking crack
unless my girl was there... then things would be different
EDM SPECTRUM:
haha... right
whats the answer to life?
JACKSIN:
To be the happiest you can be & trying to make others as happy as you... & not kill
EDM SPECTRUM:
Who is your favorite cartoon character?
JACKSIN:
Hmmm....
tough one
I watch so many cartoons!
I'd have to go with the boss from Harvey Birdman... Steven Colbert does an excellent job of portraying a boss that doesn't care or listen... I run into that everyday so it makes it all the more funny to me.... Meatwad at a close second... he's so cute
EDM SPECTRUM:
hahaha Meatwad!! i love that show!
he is too cute
lol
JACKSIN:
i know!
lil ball of meat, just want to take him home
EDM SPECTRUM:
hahaha
what advice do you have for other musicians?
JACKSIN:
so not djs but musicians?
EDM SPECTRUM:
DJs and musicians...
JACKSIN:
oh okey...
that really is two different groups.. so I'll separate that.
if you don't mind of course
EDM SPECTRUM:
haha ok... sorry... my fault
JACKSIN:
saw good
For the DJs out there, practice all you can! Once you get that sweet track that will mutilate the dancefloor, try mixing in/out of it with a few different tracks to get a feel for the measurements & the levels you'll expect to hear. Also, love what you play. Don't fall into the traps of playing genres you don't feel, you're downer attitude will spread if you don't like it & there's always....
others that will play the same style. Play what you feel passionate about, it will show & the crowd will be more into it when they see you jamming along!
I feel somewhat sheepish giving advice to producers as I'm in the medium stages of knowledge, but I've learned a few things. Get nice monitors! Bad studio speakers will spell certain doom to your tracks. If a sound doesn't contribute to the bass, then filter it out. Even hi-hats can fill a spot in you're lower frequencies so use a low pass filter to get the bass out of anything that doesn't...
have bass. That way you're mixes will sound hot & not muddy. Also, test you're mixes on a variety of speakers, whether that be your car, boombox, computer speakers, or club pa. Get an over all feel for what levels are too loud/soft. That way your track will sound better on any system.
EDM SPECTRUM:
I'm sure all of the artists viewing the interview will be glad for the advice... no matter what level you are at... its always good to hear words of advice from fellow artists
What do you think about the EDM Spectrum and would you change anything?
JACKSIN:
I think EDMS has unlimited potenial! A welcome spot for amatures or veterans alike to post music & mixes. I see the future of EDMS having the ability for plenty of artists to contribute to streaming mix shows & even tapping into the distribution aspects of business like selling tracks.
Proton Radio started in roughly the same way that EDMS did & now they're making a killing off their label. I can only hope the artists contributing to EDMS have the same drive as the people that run it!
EDM SPECTRUM:
and would you change anything?
JACKSIN:
about edms?
EDM SPECTRUM: yes
JACKSIN:
The first remix competition is a great start! Voting on favorite artists would be nice.
Definitely like the idea of a remix comp.
EDM SPECTRUM:
well Jacksin... thank you so much for taking the time to let me interview you and thank you for the site props... we do what we can... we love all of you and we love EDM so we'll keep it going and keep growing for as long as possible
JACKSIN:
I really hope the best for EDMS as view it as a welcome rain for the desert that is local producers & djs
EDM SPECTRUM:
awwww thats cool... thanks
JACKSIN:
No thank you!
