This interview was conducted by EDM Spectrum Team Member, Ashley, and was conducted via Instant Messaging.
EDM SPECTRUM:
At this very moment, what are you thinking?
JARBS:
I'm thinking... how on earth am I going to get all the things done that I need to get done in the next three weeks?!
...
EDM SPECTRUM:
what happens in three weeks?
JARBS:
I have two more weeks of classes, then finals week for college. Plus I'm trying to do as much producing as I can. It's tough to juggle it all!
EDM SPECTRUM:
I bet! I've told you before that I find it amazing that you do all of these things at once! I don't know how you ever find time to sleep!
How did you first get into making electronic music?
JARBS:
Well, of course it all started by hearing other artists. I listened to songs by Prodigy, Alice Deejay, Sash!, Juno Reactor, etc.
I started using Acid I think, but I didn't like it. I finally found Fruityloops and I was hooked! Been writing ever since.
EDM SPECTRUM:
Aside from fruityloops, what other tools do you use to make music?
JARBS:
Nothing, aside from external VST plugins (soft synths). All my production is done within FL Studio, and always has been. Sometimes people are downright amazed that I can create such good quality music with what they see as a amature production program.
EDM SPECTRUM:
I find that amazing too considering most artists use a bunch of different tools... Take me through the steps you use to make a song...
JARBS:
Well, I basically always have music playing in my head, be it songs I've heard before or melodies I've created that day. Sometimes I love a melody so much, that I put it down in FL Studio. Typically then I try to develop symphonic chords around the melody, and an interesting bassline. From there I develop the entire structure of the song.
EDM SPECTRUM:
Choose one of your song titles...
JARBS:
Last Shot
EDM SPECTRUM:
How did you come up with that name?
JARBS:
Actually, an odd story. I came across a vocal sample of what sounded like a Russian or German guy saying "Shot" and it sounded cool. I ended up integrating it into the song in certain places, and I decided to call the song Last Shot. Eventually the vocal sample got on my nerves, and actually sounded contrived, so I took it out, and kept the song name.
EDM SPECTRUM:
That is an odd story! lol... but very interesting....
JARBS:
*smiles*
EDM SPECTRUM:
If you could recommend three songs to me right now, whether they are yours or another artist's, what would they be?
JARBS:
Oh lets see... first of all is my newest song "Chance" which is as of yet, unreleased. It's a wonderful sound and feel without getting too complex. Second would be Blank & Jones - Desire. I just LOVE the energy in that song! Finally would be Airbase Presents The Scarab - Soul Sailor. I think it has the most inventive melody and bassline I've heard in a long time.
EDM SPECTRUM:
If you were stranded on an island and could only have three things with you, what would they be?
JARBS:
Does a woman count as a "thing"?
EDM SPECTRUM:
sure
JARBS:
Then first of all I would have my wife with me! I'm sure she wouldn't mind... Second would be a rowboat. Third would be a bunch of fresh water.
I guess!
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol... smart thinking
If you had to stay on the island... what would you name it?
JARBS:
Wilson
lol!
EDM SPECTRUM:
haha nice
ok... back to some more serious stuff... You've been producing music for over six years now... How do you feel about the EDM scene today as opposed to a few years back?
JARBS:
Well to be honest with you, only in the past year have I been introduced to the more modern sound. Before that, I had been writing with older trance as my inspiration, sometimes as old as 1998 or 2000. Back then I absolutely loved the sound, and tried to mimic my music after it. Once I was thrown into the more modern sound, I was absolutely amazed, and my productions showed it. So to answer the question, I feel that the scene today is broad and growing, and the sounds are becoming more and more unique. But a few years back were the best days of EDM, and I'll never forget how they have impacted my life.
EDM SPECTRUM:
with that said... How do you feel about the current state of the music industry (i.e. artists, albums, performances, record labels, etc)?
JARBS:
I have mixed feelings. As far as artists go, it seems that almost anybody can pick up an illegal copy of any sequencing program and make up some music. That bothers me, and I think that it "dilutes" the genre and has damaged the uniqueness of it. Regarding albums, it seems that for an EDM artist to release a full album is almost unheard of. Typically singles are released on vinyl, and it seems like such a waste to me. I think that the record labels within the EDM genre are more understanding, easier to listen, and more interested in the underground scene than most other genres. For that reason, I am grateful for the personal nature and down-to-earth feeling that the record labels have.
EDM SPECTRUM:
If you could meet one famous person who would it be and why?
JARBS:
I would want to meet Armin Van Buuren. I hear that he's a very pleasant and happy man in person, and mostly I would want to spend a little time picking his brain. I'd like to know what he had to do to get to where he is now, the type of attitude that is required... things like that. Hopefully he could influence me to push harder.
EDM SPECTRUM:
Is Armin your favorite artist?
JARBS:
I think overall he's my favorite EDM artist, which includes both his live work and production work.
but as far as production alone, he's not my favorite
EDM SPECTRUM:
who is your favorite?
JARBS:
I knew you were going to ask! That's a really tough one. Right now I've been enjoying music from all sorts of producers, but I suppose that my favorite at the moment would be Ace Da Brain / Ace's Delight.
EDM SPECTRUM:
You produce trance... is this your favorite style of music to listen to, or do you prefer other genres as well?
JARBS:
Yes, Trance is my favorite to listen to and produce, specifically Melodic Trance. I've dabbled in producing Psy-Trance, Electro, Techno, Industrial, etc. and I enjoy listening to most all genres, except Country and Goth.
EDM SPECTRUM:
What would you say your personal strengths and weaknesses are?
JARBS:
I think a personal strength is knowing what I want, and doing what I need to do to get it. Another strength is my knowledge and understanding of music and what sounds good. A weakness would probably be my drive - it seems that sometimes I give up too easily, especially if the going gets too tough.
EDM SPECTRUM:
ok... you want to have a little more fun?
JARBS:
of course!
EDM SPECTRUM:
This or that?
JARBS:
this
EDM SPECTRUM:
black and white or color?
JARBS:

EDM SPECTRUM:

JARBS:

EDM SPECTRUM:

JARBS:

EDM SPECTRUM:

JARBS:

EDM SPECTRUM:

JARBS:
hopefully music will bring money... but we'll have to just see, won't we?

EDM SPECTRUM:
What is your favorite food?
JARBS:
Combination Lo Mein from the Panda Garden Chinese restaurant
(in Ellensburg, Washington)
EDM SPECTRUM:
mmm... yummy
what is the first job you ever had?
JARBS:
I worked in the Home department at JC Penney over 5 years ago.
EDM SPECTRUM:
did you like it?
JARBS:
No. I had to wear a suit and tie to work, and I was only 16!
EDM SPECTRUM:
If there was one place you could be right now, where would it be?
JARBS:
At home, in bed.
I know it's boring, but honestly... that's all I can think of right now!
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol.. not boring! I think a lot of ppl might say that!
aside from at home, in bed.. lol... where do you see yourself in five years?
JARBS:
Well, depending on how my music career goes, I would either be touring around America or the World, or sitting in a corner office as the Marketing Manager of some big company.
EDM SPECTRUM:
What advice do you have for other musicians?
JARBS:
First and foremost, write what you love! Be ready for critique, and be willing to learn and get better. Never feel that you've "arrived" - keep pushing ahead to the forefront of your genre if you can! But most of all, and I know it's cliche, have fun. There's no reason to lose your head when it comes to music! It is there for our enjoyment and pleasure, so make sure that you enjoy your own music.
EDM SPECTRUM:
What is your favorite quote?
JARBS:
"Don't take life too seriously. You'll never make it out alive." Elbert Hubbard
EDM SPECTRUM:
that is definitely true
JARBS:
*smiles*
EDM SPECTRUM:
What is your biggest pet peeve?
JARBS:
Walking around in socks, and then stepping on a water puddle. Nothing quite bugs me as much as that!
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol
yeah that sucks
worst fear?
JARBS:
Rejection. Luckily I don't need to worry about it when it comes to women now that I'm married, but I believe that my fear of rejection is the one reason I haven't sent any songs out to labels for their consideration. Hopefully soon I'll get past it though.
EDM SPECTRUM:
well we hope you get past that soon too, you should put yourself out there... thats just how you have to go about it these days
JARBS:
yep! soon I hope
EDM SPECTRUM:
what else should I ask you?
JARBS:
How on earth did you become so damn sexy?
just kidding lol
EDM SPECTRUM:
oh no... u asked for it.... How on earth did you become so damn sexy?
JARBS:
haha!
I think that was because of my parents...
EDM SPECTRUM:
lol... well, thank your parents for getting busy for us LOL!
JARBS:
ew...
*smiles*
EDM SPECTRUM:
LOL
JARBS:
I don't know what questions you'd ask...
EDM SPECTRUM:
it was just a random question to see what kind of response i would get... i thought it was funny... and you had a great answer! lmao
ok... hmmm... last question....
What do you think of the EDM Spectrum? and Is there anything you would change about it?
JARBS:
I think it is great! It has a great personality to it, and the people who are in it are the best. If I were to change one thing, it might be the actual website. It is a bit hard to read at times, and the color scheme is odd.
EDM SPECTRUM:
well Jarbs...We'll keep the suggestions for the site in mind... thanks for letting us know... and thanks for taking the time to let me interview you!
JARBS:
my pleasure
